Frequently Asked Questions

What is MusicLib?

MusicLib is sheet music library management software for musicians, choirs, orchestras, bands, schools, and music organizations. It serves as both a personal digital sheet music organizer and an institutional library management tool for ensembles of any size. Upload and organize music scores (PDFs), create collections and setlists, track checkouts and reservations, and share your music library online with your group. Read our complete cataloging guide to get started.

Is MusicLib free to use?

Yes! MusicLib is completely free and includes up to 50 scores, 500 MB of storage, collections, setlists, search, forScore import/export, and a sandbox institution (up to 3 members & 25 scores). Upgrade to MusicLib Pro at $9.99/month or $99/year for unlimited scores, OCR search, backup & export, and full institution management. See our pricing page for details.

What file formats does MusicLib support?

MusicLib supports PDF files for music scores. You can upload individual PDFs, bulk import via CSV, or import from forScore backups (.4sb files). Scores can include rich metadata like composer, arranger, voicing, key, genre, and more.

Does MusicLib work with forScore?

Yes! MusicLib has full forScore compatibility. You can import forScore backups (.4sb files) to migrate your existing library, and export setlists as .4ss files that open directly in forScore. The iPad app includes native forScore import with streaming upload for large libraries. Learn more in our article on why forScore users love MusicLib.

Is there an iPad app?

Yes! MusicLib is available as a native iPad app with support for Apple Sign-In, iOS Files app integration, the Share Sheet for importing PDFs, and haptic feedback. The iPad app includes all features of the web version plus native capabilities.

How do institutions work?

Institutions let organizations share a music library with their members. You can create an institution, invite members, assign roles (student, contributor, director, admin), customize permissions, and track checkouts and reservations. All plans, including the free tier, can create institutions. Upgrade to Pro for full institution management (200 members, 3,000 scores), or contact us for custom MusicLib for Organizations plans. See our guides for choirs, orchestras, bands, and universities.

Can I export or back up my library?

Yes! Pro subscribers can export their entire library (scores, collections, setlists, and metadata) as a single .musiclib file. This can be used for offline backups, migrating between accounts, or sharing your catalog. You always own your data.

What is OCR text extraction?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) automatically extracts text from your PDF scores, making them searchable by lyrics, markings, or any text that appears in the sheet music. This Pro-tier feature means you can find scores even when you only remember a lyric or annotation.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time from the Subscription page in your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, so you'll retain access to paid features until then. Your account will revert to the free tier, and you'll keep read-only access to all your content.

Is my data secure?

Yes. MusicLib uses HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, bcrypt password hashing, secure httpOnly cookies for authentication, and CSRF protection. Payment information is processed by Stripe (PCI DSS Level 1 certified) and never stored on our servers. Your data is hosted on servers in Germany (EU) with GDPR protections. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How is MusicLib different from other music library software?

MusicLib is designed specifically as sheet music library management software rather than a general file manager. It understands music metadata (composer, arranger, voicing, key), supports forScore import, includes OCR for searching inside PDFs, and offers built-in checkout tracking and setlist building. Unlike spreadsheet-based systems, MusicLib gives your whole choir, orchestra, or band shared multi-user access with role-based permissions. It manages both your digital scores and physical library inventory.

How does MusicLib compare to other sheet music library software?

MusicLib includes several capabilities that most other sheet music library tools do not: full checkout and reservation tracking with due dates, OCR search that lets you find scores by searching text inside PDFs, a native iPad and iPhone app, full forScore import (.4sb) and export (.4ss), drag-and-drop setlists, and physical copy tracking with checkout, due dates, and overdue flagging. For a detailed feature-by-feature comparison, see our MusicLib vs Archive440 comparison.

What is the best sheet music library software?

The best choice depends on your needs. For library management specifically (cataloging, checkout tracking, setlists, and shared institutional access), MusicLib is the most complete option available. Archive440 is another dedicated cataloging tool with strengths in budget tracking and wish lists. forScore excels at on-screen performance reading on iPad but isn't designed for managing shared libraries or tracking physical copies. Choir Genius and Chorilo focus on rehearsal and communication rather than library management. Many organizations still use spreadsheets, which work for small collections but break down as libraries grow or when multiple people need access. MusicLib is the strongest choice if your primary need is organizing, sharing, and tracking a sheet music library, especially one with both digital and physical scores.

Can MusicLib handle large music libraries?

Yes. MusicLib Pro includes unlimited score storage with 50 GB of file storage, and institutions support up to 200 members with 3,000 scores. For organizations that need more, such as university music departments, large choral societies, or professional ensembles, MusicLib for Organizations offers custom plans with higher limits, priority support, and onboarding assistance. The system is designed to scale from a personal collection of a few dozen scores to institutional libraries with thousands of works and hundreds of members. See our university music department guide for more on large-scale use cases.

Does MusicLib track physical sheet music copies?

Yes, this is one of MusicLib's key differentiators. You can track individual physical copies of each score, check them out to members with due dates, flag overdue returns, and manage reservations for upcoming performances. Most sheet music software only handles digital files. MusicLib manages your physical and digital inventory together in one system, so you always know where every copy is and who has it.

Can I use MusicLib for my school or university?

Absolutely. MusicLib is used by K–12 music programs and university music departments alike. Institution features include role-based access (so students, faculty, and staff each see what they need), checkout tracking for distributing and collecting scores, and customizable permissions per role. Students can browse the catalog and view their checkouts without being able to edit library records. Directors and librarians get full control. For departments with more than 200 members, MusicLib for Organizations offers custom plans. See our university music department guide for setup recommendations.
